Kilgore, Tx (KETK) — The first month of operating The Firehouse Bar & Girll is in the books and Kilgore firefighter Mark Henderson says they weren't expecting to taste such sweet success so soon.
" Not knowin what we were doing..it was a little difficult at first, but know that we've been able to get a system going..and know what we're doing, it's getting a lot easier to handle the crowds."
Henderson says interacting with the community has been a key ingredient in their recipe for success.
"Just getting to interact with the people, having the kids come in..we give them hats, we give them stickers, to see the joy on their faces when they see a firefighter doing something other than fighting fire, being part of the community."
Fire Marshal Brandon Bigos agrees.
" Meeting the public..talking to them..that's the exciting part about that and hearing how excited they are about a place like this."
Resident Blake Hightower says he visits the bar & grill at least once a week.
" I think it's great and I hope it goes well for them. Food is pretty good!"
The restaurant originally planned to use a touch screen ordering system. But, with the influx of customers, it was slowing them down.
Henderson explains the new method that allows more interaction between firefighters and customers.
" We're doing a more personal approach now, by actually coming to the table..take their orders..getting the food in a little bit quicker."
Henderson says he likes the way success is tasting.
"I feel very proud, we came in here and took over something that was failing..and now it's a success."
