Tyler (KETK) — A new helmet cover has come to Tyler.
Will it help stop concussions?
It's called the Guardian.
It's a new protective cover for football helmets.
It's got extra foam to help absorb impacts.
Bishop Gorman is already using it in its middle school program and the Crusaders are going to use it in their high school program during practice.
Bishop Gorman is one of just 11 schools in Texas to try out this new, hopefully safer, helmet cover.
"It significantly lessens the rate of concussions during practice by close to 70% on some parts of the helmet," said Bishop Gorman coach Cody Gipson. "It's a great product."
"We're going to try and put our kids in the best environment to be safe and successful, to enjoy a great football career and a long healthy life after that," Gipson added.
Clemson and Temple are two college programs that are using this new helmet cover in practice.
