EDINBURG, Texas (KETK) — A newborn is recovering and his mother faces possible criminal charges after Kountze police say a pet raccoon attacked the infant.
When officers arrived to the scene, they found a two-week-old baby boy with lacerations across his left eye and across the top of his head. Officers said the child was bleeding profusely.
A preliminary investigation suggests the baby was left inside the home alone with the two pet raccoons.
Texas Parks and Wildlife says it euthanized two pet raccoons on scene as a safety precaution. the remains were later sent for rabies testing.
According to its owner, the female raccoon that attacked the infant was in heat and became aggressive.
Animal services warns, you can not take the wild animal, nature out of it. Once it reaches maturity sometimes they will turn and can harm a person.
Kountze police say they expect to charge the 19-year-old mother with abandoning or endangering a child which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Texas Parks and Wildlife also expects to file charges since the animals were housed without a permit or license.
