Tyler, TX (KETK) — "Brookshire Grocery Company's 26th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament" teed off Monday, expecting to raise more than $450,000 for children's charities.
KETK spoke with Brookshire's President, Rick Rayford, who said, "There's quite a few charities that will receive the money. Always one of the biggest is Children's Miracle Network, that we've supported since the inception of this golf tournament". Other charities include Boys and Girls Clubs, Children's Advocacy Centers, and the Discovery Science Place.
The tournament has grown every year since it first began, with more than 600 golfers participating this time around. Rebecca Sanders, Brookshire's Director of Public Relations, who said, "Well it's gotten so popular because everyone feels the importance of supporting children's charities. What better way to support our communities than to support the youth and the young people"? It's popularity has been widespread, so the fundraiser took place at six different golf courses around Tyler.
Over the last 25 years, the tournament has donated almost $4 million to help the children. Rayford said, "We want to help as many people as we can, so we're very thankful". In order to thank those who participated, an appreciation dinner was thrown at Harvey Convention Center.
