Tyler (KETK) — On Monday night, deputies arrested the father of an injured infant after his story proved to contain inconsistencies.
At 10:35 p.m., Jarrod Deray Phillips, 33, of Tyler was booked into the Smith County Jail on an outstanding charge of possession of marijuana. During an interview following the arrest, the suspect's charges were changed to injury to a child.
Detectives said Phillips story was not consistent with what representative from Children's Medical Center in Dallas were telling investigators. The injuries did not match up with his explanation.
Back on April 24, at 4:30 p.m., deputies responded to reports of an unresponsive 6-month-old infant in the 16000 block of FM 2767. The child was taken by ambulance to Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler and then flown to Dallas for treatment.
Family members told deputies the child fell from a bed and received an injury to the head. At this time, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division opened an investigation.
Judge Christi Kennedy of the 114th District Court set Phillips’ bond at $750,000. He remains in the Smith County Jail.
