Gregg County, Tx (KETK) — In the state of Texas, motorcycle fatalities rose from 470 in 2012 to 494 in 2013. But, Gregg County is bucking that trend.
There were four motorcycle accidents that resulted in death in 2013, down from five in 2012.
Longview Police Officer Kristie Brian says she attributes the decline to Gregg County drivers paying attention to the road and watching out for motorcycles.
Brian says it's crucial drivers are extra cautious when traveling beside or behind a motorcycle. If traveling behind one she says keep your distance because even the slightest bump with a car can send a motorcycle driver flying.
According to the CDC: motorcycles account for just 3 % of the vehicles on the road but 14% of people who die in traffic accidents are on a motorcycle.
Brian wants to remind everyone that helmets save lives.
" Just like seatbelts in cars, we encourage the motorcycle riders to wear helmets ..you fall you hit your head.. at least you're gonna have that little extra bit of protection."
