Sulphur Springs, Texas (KETK) — On Friday, two men were killed at a Sulphur Springs lake after a current swept them away while they were noodling.
According to Sulphur Springs Captain Jay Sanders, at 12:15 p.m., authorities were called to help with a possible drowning at in an area of water between Lake Sulphur Springs and Century Lake. Witnesses told police two people were crossing from one bank to the other when a current swept them under, and the men were not able to surface again.
A third person attempted to save the men underwater, but he was not successful. Sanders said he was lucky to be alive after a fourth person in a boat came to the rescue and saved him.
Sanders said a broken dam in the area separates the two lakes, but following heavy rain, they merge and a heavy current is formed.
Officials have not released the identities of the men killed, but authorities did say they were white males and 18 or 19.
