Alto, TExas (KETK) — Two thieves were caught in the act of stealing from a Cherokee County resident's garage Wednesday afternoon.
At 2:15 p.m., deputies were notified of a homeowner who came up on two men taking engine parts from his garage. The caller said he followed the suspect on Highway 21 between Alton and Nacogdoches.
While on Highway 21 near County Road 2610, the burglars pulled over and walked toward the victim's vehicle. The suspects told him they would return the parts if he didn't call law enforcement. When the victim told them he had already made a call, they ran down the road and into the wood, leaving their vehicle and stolen goods behind.
Alto officers were the first on scene and told responding Cherokee County deputies of the suspect's description and where they were last seen running into the woods.
Once a perimeter was established, a suspect stepped out of the wood lines about 15 minutes into the search on CR 2610 and attempted to flag down a passing vehicle. The vehicle was an unmarked investigators vehicles. The officer stepped out of his vehicle and the suspect turned to run, but instead gave up and was arrested.
The second suspect was found within 20 minutes and was also taken into custody without incident.
Michael Heath Emmons, 25, of Henderson, and Ricky Lee Schakosky, 28, of Nacogdoches, were booked into the Cherokee County Jail on charges of burglary.
Bonds were set at $4,000 for each suspect, who were arraigned by Justice of the Peace Pct 3 Judge Grimes on June 6, 2014. Other charges may be filed, pending the outcome of the investigation.
