Longview — Longview ISD’s longest serving board member said farewell Monday during a celebration honoring his 40 years of service.
John Harrison, 80, has served on the district’s Board of Trustees for half of his life. Harrison was replaced by Ginia Northcutt, the only woman on the school board.
Harrison cited health concerns in January as a reason for leaving his position.
“I chose not to run for re-election due to medical problems. It’s a little difficult to explain but I don’t feel like I could really put everything behind the position at this time,” Harrison said.
Harrison began his tenure in 1971, just as integration was being introduced to Texas schools. He represented District 4 and had four children graduate from Longview High School.
