Kilgore — Officials here are considering switching EMS services to the Kilgore Fire Department in a move that would add firefighters.
The proposal, which was discussed Tuesday night during a council workshop, would see EMS services taken away from Champion EMS. Kilgore has contracted with the nonprofit organization since 2002.
Kilgore doesn’t pay Champion for its services. The organization is funded through the patients it transports.
“We are a smaller department, and many citizens have asked about increased staffing,” said Assistant Kilgore Fire Chief Mike Simmons.
“We are looking at doing as many fire departments have done and taking in the EMS services, (which would) allow us to add firefighters to our department and put more boots on the ground.
