Lake Tyler, TX (KETK) — Lake Tyler has been an East Texas tourist destination for the last 60 years. Now, the city has officially approved a long-term ten year agreement for new management, and the marina is being renovated to attract even more attention.
KETK spoke with the new owner of the property, Terri Waggener, who said, "We just have a true love for the lake and this marina". First on the list of priorities is opening the marina restaurant. Waggener explained, "At this point we're really digging in trying to get it up and open and going, and hope that people will come out and visit us to see the improvements to see the improvements that we've made". Improvements to the inside of the bar and grill have already started, and management hopes to have it open by the 4th of July. She said, "It's just basic cleanup. I mean we put a lot of elbow grease in it. It really had not been cleaned properly in several months maybe even years".
A new plan for short-term RV visits is also being created. This will stop people from staying longer than two weeks. Greg Morgan from the Utilities and Public Works department said, "We're working with people that have had the longer leases to resolve that issue, and their game plan is to have those converted over to 2 week short term rentals". Morgan believes could create an additional $500,000 in revenue. He mentioned, "Our goal is to develop the marina into the type of facility that will bring visitors to the area, bring tax dollars to the area, and help stimulate the economy".
The renovations will continue for years to come, but many of the projects will be complete by the end of 2014.
