Longview, Texas (KETK) — The Longview Police Department is using social media in a new way to fight back against crime, specifically stolen vehicles.
Public Information Office Kristie Brian said her department first got the idea to use Twitter to locate missing vehicles after attending a social media conference for law enforcement in May. They started their handle in June and have already recovered one vehicle through the program.
The new strategy has been spreading across the country to help police departments work closer with the community. Brian said law enforcement is seeing success.
"It's just another way to reach out to the public to get their help," Brian told KETK.
The Twitter page also helps find trailers and other property that can be stolen in a similar manner.
