Winnsboro, Texas (KETK) — One person was detained for a short time Tuesday after East Texas law enforcement officials were able to recover an abducted child from Benton, Arkansas.
At around noon, the Winnsboro Police Department was contacted by the Benton Police Department in Arkansas, said Captain Chris Hill. Detectives there told local authorities a man and woman were believed to be headed to a location in Winnsboro from Pottsboro, Texas, with an 6-year-old girl.
Benton officers were able to provide Winsboro PD with a description of a vehicle, a license plate number of the suspected SUV and a location the fugitives were expected to appear.
At 3:19 p.m. when a car arrived at the undisclosed site, the child stepped out of the vehicle and was rescued by police waiting in unmarked cars. A woman, who was the lone adult passenger, was detained for questioning. The girl was turned over unharmed to her maternal grandmother at the scene.
Authorities later determined the woman met the wanted pair in Denison, Texas, and swapped vehicles. After brief questioning, Winnsboro Police released the woman and listed her as a person of interest. It's possible she could later face organized criminal activity or aiding and abetting.
Winnsboro P.D. turned the case over to other agencies where the offenses occurred.
Law enforcement officials with the Denison Police Department or Benton Police Department were not available for comment Tuesday evening. Due to the kidnapping crossing state lines, the U.S. Marshal's Service is also assisting in the search for the perpetrators.
The names, descriptions and possible direction of travel of the kidnappers are unknown at this time. KETK will bring more information as it becomes available.
