TYLER - Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith announced he will retire December 31st, 2012.
Sheriff Smith says he's making the announcement now to give candidates time to start campaigning.
Smith says about six people are interested in the position, but he will support Chief Deputy Bobby Garmon.
When Smith retires, he will have served 47 years in the law enforcement field. He was elected to Smith County Sheriff in 1976 and was one of the first to reinstate prison labor.
