An Illinois community is mourning the death of 7-year-old Jason Walter after the boy was viciously attacked by four dogs Wednesday.
Walter, his brother and mother were visiting Eric Shanklin at his rural home in Marshall County where the incident took place.
According to Marshall County Sheriff Rob Russell the 7-year-old was mauled by three pit-bulls and a mixed-breed in Shanklin's driveway early Wednesday morning.
Family members called 911.
"He was transported to the Varna firehouse. Lifeflight was called and he was pronounced dead several minutes later," Russell said.
Sheriff Russell said the mixed-breed dog belonged to Eric Shanklin and the three pit-bulls were owned by a person staying in a trailer on the property.
"The four dogs were indeed taken to the veterinary clinic were they were euthanized and taken down to Galesburg for testing," said Russell. "It's just a terrible tragedy for all those involved. EMS were, everybody was touched by this. It's a terrible tragedy. I can't say much more about it."
Russell said authorities continue to investigate the incident and the case will be turned over to the state's attorney's office.
He added it is too early to say is criminal charges will be filed.
