A Harris County man fatally shot another man Monday trying to steal rims from a vehicle, officials said.

The dead man was found in a car that had crashed into a mailbox about a block away from where a homeowner in the 5700 block of Walnutgate reported someone had tried to steal rims from his car, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The homeowner and his cousin shot the man, officials said.
