TYLER - Tragedy strikes on a southeast Texas high school field Friday when a quarterback dies on the sideline. Now, parents and coaches are raising concerns about how best to protect their students on the field.
Experts say cases where a student tragically and unexpectedly dies are rare but, not uncommon.
Friday, Reggie Garrett, the quarterback of West Orange-Stark High School died after throwing a touchdown pass in the second quarter of the game. Paramedics say the teen had a seizure which they believe may have taken his life. Athletic directors say physicals are done regularly to look for sign of a problem in students but, one east texas parent points out another issue. One mother says the medical history in her family almost kept her child from playing.
