SAN ANTONIO (AP) - U.S. Democratic Rep. Solomon Ortiz will ask
for a manual recount after losing a South Texas seat he has held
for nearly three decades by less than 800 votes.
Ortiz trailed Republican former small business-owner Blake
Farenthold by 799 votes after Tuesday's election according to
unofficial results from the Secretary of State's Office.
But he gained seven votes from previously uncounted votes that weren't
certified until Thursday.
In a statement late Friday, Ortiz said, "just in the first days
of counting, we've seen uncounted votes appear."
He said he was putting together the documents necessary to
request a recount in the state's District 27.
Under Texas rules, he will have to pay for the recount unless it
affects the election's final outcome.
