LONGVIEW, TX --- At about 7:10 a.m. this morning, a trooper stopped a Chevrolet 1500 pickup for speeding 16 miles over the speed limit on Smelley Road in Harrison County.
The driver was identified as Charles Ray Owens Jr., 37, who had an outstanding warrant for burglary out of Michigan. The driver eventually fled the scene at a high rate of speed and headed westbound on Page Road.
The suspect ran a stop sign at Loop 281, hit a pickup truck and then struck a Honda Accord on the driver's side door area.
The Honda driver-62-year-old Robert Smith of Longview-died at the scene. The driver of the pickup was not injured. The pursuit lasted three to four minutes.
Owens was taken to Good Shepard Medical Center in Longview in serious but stable condition.
After he is released from the hospital, he will be arraigned on multiple charges. The exact charges have not been determined.
The crash is under investigation.
