AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas House Speaker Joe Straus is lashing
out at his intraparty challenger for the speakership, Rep. Warren
Chisum, accusing Chisum of dividing the House GOP caucus.
Straus confronted Chisum in a letter dated Wednesday that opens
with: "Have you no shame?"
Straus is a moderate San Antonio Republican, while Chisum is a
more conservative Republican from Pampa who has spearheaded a
movement to pressure conservatives into opposing Straus.
In his letter, Straus accuses Chisum of engaging "in a campaign
of distortions and attacks" that have subjected House Republicans
"to a constant strain of negativity solely to return to power a
small faction that lost it in January 2009."
That was when a bipartisan revolt drove Rep. Tom Craddick from
the speakership and installed Straus.
