SMITH COUNTY - Kathy Barfield lives right across the road from the Reynolds family on County Road 21 in the Chapel Hill area.
"This is, this is a quiet neighborhood. We've got good neighbors, I wish I knew more of them better, but, yeah, I was real shocked," Barfield said.
Smith County officials were told that Ricky and Eva Reynolds recently let 39-year-old Chad Otis Smith from Arlington - a man they both knew - live in a mobile home next to their property nearly rent free.
Eva Reynolds' brother, who recently died, used to live in the mobile home.
Smith County officials were told on Sunday night, Eva Reynolds went over to the mobile home apparently to gather some of her brother's things.
That's when her husband came over to the mobile home and through the window saw her kissing Jones on the cheek, which led to Reynolds allegedly shooting the man in the head.
After Eva Reynolds called 911, her husband then led Smith County deputies on a car chase that ended in a stand-off at the intersection of County Roads 230 and 2142.
"As a matter of procedure, we notified our SWAT members, so as our SWAT team was beginning to arrive on the scene to where the standoff was taking place - is when he surrendered," said Smith County's Lt. Tony Dana.
As for Reynold's neighbors like Kathy Barfield - situations like this only reinforce something they have been meaning to do.
"My grandson says that we're gonna walk and meet the neighbors, that's one of our goals this fall," Barfield said.
A murder warrant was issued for Reynolds with a $200,000 bond. He's now in a Smith County jail.
Officials say he's not talking without an attorney.
