TYLER - Pam Gabriel is the owner of "The Sweet Gourmet" in Tyler. She says sales seem to be up this year - and she's excited that this weekend's first-ever "Small Business Saturday" is intended to put the spotlight on small businesses like hers in the coming years.
"This is what we need as small business owners. If we're not careful, we're swallowed up by the big box companies around and we need this, we need to promote shopping with your small local businesses," Gabriel said.
American Express officials say the idea is not to take sales away from big-box retailers, but to stress the importance of shopping at small, independently-owned businesses as well, because it helps local communities.
"I think small businesses tend to typically get overlooked during that particular black friday, just because we're not the big business, we don't have all the promotional materials to get there. So I think it's something great to utilize in your community to go by the small business and see what they actually have for you," said Holly Short with "Ganache: More Than A Cupcake," in Tyler.
Reports show for every $100 spent in a local small business, $68 stays in the community.
"Where as here with our store, our insurance is local, many of our products are local, our employees are local, it just helps our community all the way around," said Pam Gabriel.
Small businesses like "Ganache: More Than A Cupcake" and "Sweet Gourmet" were both well aware of this year's special day for small businesses - and they're hoping next year's event will be even bigger.
On the Today Show this week, Ken Chenault, the Chairman and CEO of American Express said small businesses have 'pushed this economy forward - and what they need is our support.'
