WASHINGTON (AP) - A person familiar with the case tells The
Associated Press that Toyota has agreed to pay the government $32.4
million in additional fines over its handling of two recalls.
The penalties will settle investigations into how Toyota dealt
with recalls over accelerator pedals that could get trapped in
floor mats and steering relay rods that could break and lead to a
loss of control. The person spoke on condition of anonymity ahead
of a formal announcement.
Toyota's board of directors approved the settlement Tuesday at a
meeting in Japan.
It brings Toyota's total government fines to nearly $50 million.
Toyota has recalled more than 11 million vehicles globally since
the fall of 2009.
