Investigators say the 36-year-old pilot was able to call for help .
The Plano man was taken from the wreckage by helicopter to a Tyler hospital. He has broken ankles and other cuts, but is expected to survive.
Even though investigators say Michael Thern is an experienced pilot, he crashed because he ran out of fuel.

WOOD CO.—Emergency responders report a plane crash Thursday morning in Wood County.
Authorities say a small plane went down near the Wood County Airport on County Road 2355, between Mineola and Quitman. The crash happened around 5:15 Thursday morning.
