Houston — An autopsy has determined that the death of a 72-year-old Harris County Jail inmate earlier this year was a homicide.
Norman Ford Hicks Sr., who was a paranoid schizophrenic, died Jan. 22 from complications of a heart attack after suffering blunt head trauma and a broken nose.
Family members were furious to learn the death was a homicide.
The Houston Chronicle reports that the sheriff's office has refused to say whether any of its deputies or employees had an altercation with Hicks.
In a short statement, the sheriff's office suggested Hicks' death may not be a "murder" just because his death was ruled a homicide.
The district attorney's office is investigating.
A ruling of homicide means the death was not a result of natural causes, an accident or suicide.
