HOUSTON (AP) - Attorneys for two condemned Texas inmates are accusing state prison officials of violating federal law for more than 25 years by improperly acquiring drugs used for executions.
Letters sent Wednesday to the U.S. attorney general and the Texas public safety department director contend the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has been buying drugs for lethal injections using a federal registration number assigned to a prison hospital that hasn't existed since about 1983.
The lawyers represent inmates Cleve Foster, who is set to die Tuesday, and Humberto Leal, facing execution in July.
Prison agency officials had no immediate response.
The attorneys say if the prison system is found to have violated the law, federal officials could revoke its permission to possess controlled substances. That presumably could block future lethal
