Two Angelina County men were arrested on animal cruelty charges Sunday.
Juan Jose Gonzalez, 49, and Bruno Gonzalez, 29, were arrested for fighting chickens at the eldest Gonzalez's home off state Highway 103 west by the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.
When officers arrived, they saw several people standing around a circular cage in the backyard, according to an arrest affidavit. Officers also found a ring believed to have housed chicken fights because of the amount of feathers littering the ground and fighting kits with several spurs, the affidavit stated.
There were about 70 chickens, mostly males all over the property, several of them with fresh blood on the heads and legs, according to the report. Several dead chickens were inside a feed sack next to the fighting ring, the report stated.
Two of the birds were taken by animal control.
When officers questioned Juan Gonzalez about it, he said he did not know it was illegal to fight chickens while Bruno Martinez said they were just sparring the birds to train them for fighting, according to the report.
According to jail records the two men are out on bond, but information on the amount was unavailable Tuesday night.
