GREGG COUNTY — On Thursday, after 54-year-old Robert Craig Varnell's arrest, the school officials in Longview say, Varnell resigned.
Adam Holland is the spokesperson for Longview ISD.
He says school officials quickly accepted Varnell's resignation...and the charges surprised them.
"My goodness, they're just something that you just don't expect from a teacher with all of the background checks and fingerprinting that all schools do - it just - it was a complete shocker," Holland said.
The affidavit KETK obtained on Friday is full of disturbing details.
The victim told authorities Varnell touched him inappropriately and performed sexual acts on him numerous times from 2007, when he was just 13 years old, until 2010.
Apparently many of these incidents took place when Varnell was employed with the Computer Science Department at Letourneau University in Longview.
The incidents happened in various locations. Including where Varnell used to live - on Ewing Street in Longview...and at the victim's home.
Varnell had been employed with Longview ISD since the fall of 2009.
"More importantly, he was a University Interscholastic League Coordinator and was pretty much on every campus at one time or another because he worked in a district wide capacity," Holland said.
Holland says there was no indication of Varnell's alleged conduct at Longview ISD.
"Anyone with a history - they don't work for us. So we were caught way off guard with these charges. We just pray for all the families involved that they can get through this," Holland said.
The affadavit also shows...Varnell kept in touch with the young man through e-mail, his cell phone, and Facebook.
Investigators say they have many messages from Varnell as evidence.
Varnell is still in the Gregg County jail on $500,000 bond.
