WASHINGTON — Defense chief Robert Gates says he's seen "no evidence" that Pakistan's senior leadership knew where Osama bin Laden had been living for years.
But Gates says he supposes that "somebody" in Pakistan knew about it.
And Joint Chiefs chairman Adm. Mike Mullen says it may take a while to find out if bin Laden had Pakistani protectors, as U.S. intelligence agencies analyze notebooks, computer data and other material seized when bin Laden was killed this month in a U.S. raid.
Meanwhile, five Democratic senators are asking the White House for assurances on Pakistan's commitment to fight terrorism before Congress provides additional billions in U.S. aid.
