Andrew Barthel, like most high school guys, likes stuff that blows up.
Dropping Mentos mints into a Diet Coke bottle triggers a sugar powered geyser that looks super cool without actually hurting anything.
Barthel mulled over the possibility of using the chemical reaction as part of a small scale graduation prank, but soon decided to make his idea into something bigger... like a world record.
Friday morning Barthel and more than 3,000 people from his community got together on the soccer fields near Minnesota's Princeton High School around 11:15 a.m.
They dropped Mentos mints into Diet Coke bottles and watched as foamed up sode shot skyward.
The previous record was thought to be somewhere around 2,800, and if certified, Andrew's crew of 3,051 would beat that handily.
