Lufkin, TX — A Lufkin mother was arrested Monday morning for reportedly leaving her 1-year-old child home alone.
Ashley Nicole Montgomery, 22, was arrested after 1 a.m. Monday on a charge of abandoning a child with the intent to return. An off-duty officer working security at Pinewood Park Apartment walked by a unit and heard a child crying inside. He stopped for a second and several people told him they saw the mother leave the apartment more than 30 minutes before he walked by. They said when asked about the child, she told them the baby wasn’t at the apartment, an arrest report stated. After searching, the witnesses reportedly found an open window and coaxed the child to it. They got the baby out of the apartment and turned it over to the officer.
An on duty Lufkin officer arrived to investigate and climbed through the open window to inspect the apartment, finding no one there. With the help of neighbors, the officer was able to get in contact with Montgomery, who told them she left the apartment no more than five minutes before she was called by dispatch and asked to come home although the officer had already been on scene for 20 minutes, the report stated. She also said she asked someone, who was walking from 10 or 15 minutes away, to come stay with the baby. Officers were able to corroborate that she did call someone but the man said when he got to her apartment, it was locked so he assumed she took the baby instead.
In this case, child abandonment is a state jail felony, carrying up to a two-year sentence. Montgomery remained in the Angelina County Jail Monday on a $3,500 bond.
