Longview, TX — Gregg County commissioners on Monday proposed decreasing the county’s 2011-12 tax rate by a quarter of a cent.
Most homeowners’ tax bills would remain the same, but the new rate is expected to generate more money for the county because of new property added to tax rolls in the past year, County Judge Bill Stoudt said.
The 2010-11 tax rate of 26.75 cents would be dropped to 26.5 cents in 2011-12 if the court adopts it later this month. Commissioners scheduled public hearings on the proposed rate at 9 a.m. Aug. 17 and Aug. 22.
If approved, the tax bill on a Gregg County home valued at $107,000 — the average for homeowners taking a homestead exemption — would be $283.55, or about the same tax bill as for 2010-11.
“Even though we’re dropping the rate, the total tax bill for the county will go up because we’ve added new property to the tax roll,” Stoudt said. That should amount to an additional $251,000. Of that, about $249,000 will be from new property, he said.
In other business, commissioners approved a request to assist the city of Longview with re-oiling Potter, Henderson, West Radio, MacArthur and East Nelson streets; Ford Lane; and Bill Harris Road. The city is furnishing materials for the project.
