Virus found in three times as many mosquitos this year
Houston — The Houston Chronicle is reporting; this summer's drought has spread its misery on Houston-area residents with everything from parched lawns and record high temperatures to burn bans and mandatory water restrictions.
Now there's yet one more pesky misfortune: The drought could also increase the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as the West Nile Virus, say Harris County public heath and environmental officials.
"These kinds of conditions for these types of viruses are very optimal for disease transmission," said Dr. Rudy Bueno, director of the county's Public Heath and Environmental Services Mosquito Control.
To date, West Nile has been confirmed in 405 mosquito samples, almost three times as many as the the number seen at the same time last year.
