Nacogdoches, TX — Nacogdoches County sheriff's deputies helped Cherokee County sheriff's deputies on Hwy. 21 at CR 2519 get a shooting victim from a ditch and take him to an ambulance in Linwood, as well as arrest the shooter.
"What was reported to us was that they believed they had a shooting victim that was laying in a ditch in front of a residence and the armed assailant was still in the residence threatening to shoot officers and anybody else that approached," Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss said.
A portion of State Hwy. 21 was shut down for a while as deputies were at the scene. The incident was reported to the sheriff's department at about 3:30 a.m. and lasted until about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday.
"Some of our deputies worked themselves into position to provide cover fire, if necessary. Two other deputies from our county actually went to the location of the victim and retrieved him and removed him to safety, Kerss said. "Then, once the victim was out of harm's way, we held the perimeter while officers from Cherokee County established contact with the suspect and eventually talked him into surrendering to our deputies."
