AUSTIN - The Texas woman who served as the first female Press Aide in the White House has died.
Liz Carpenter served as an aide and press spokesman to Lyndon Johnson when he was Vice President, but she was named Press Secretary to Lady Bird Hohnson when she became the First Lady.
It was Liz Carpenter who, on November 22, 1963, scribbled the 58 words that Lyndon Johnson delivered to the nation when he returned to Washington, D.C., from Dallas following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Carpenter died Saturday in Austin at the age of 89.
