On March 22, 2010 at about 2:30 a.m. the Tyler Police Department responded to a Pedestrian Accident in the 1500 block of North Palace Ave.
When officers arrived on scene they discovered a black male, later identified as Alkendrick Coper, 24, from Tyler lying in the middle of the roadway. Mr. Coper had been struck by a vehicle operated by Jerry Stevenson, B/M, 51 also from Tyler while he was traveling south on North Palace Ave.
Mr. Coper was found conscious and able to communicate although he was later transported to the East Texas Medical Center hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
Mr. Stevenson was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated 2nd offense and booked into the Smith County jail.
While investigating the accident officers were unable to locate any witness; however, it appears that Mr. Coper may have walked into or had been walking in the roadway moments before being struck by Mr. Stevenson.
