Nacogdoches, Texas — Between 50 and 100 homes were evacuated on the Cherokee County side of the Angelina River on Tuesday, and officials said they remained evacuated Wednesday morning.
Nacogdoches County officials learned in an early morning briefing at the Douglass VFD command center that the fire that has scorched about 3,500 acres in Nacogdoches and 1,000 acres in Cherokee County is 75 percent contained in Nacogdoches.
The fire continues to spread back into Cherokee County, according to Nacogdoches County Judge Joe English.
The fire did manage to jump Highway 21 sometime during the night, English said.
Hwy. 21 west of Douglass will remain closed today, he said, and more than likely will be closed tomorrow due to the fire burning on the Cherokee County side. County Road 3 is closed today due to smoke and the number of emergency vehicles traveling that roadway.
