The Boss 302 first appeared in 1969 and was an immediate hit. And, well, why not? Take a classic 302 cubic inich Ford V8, drop it into an equally classic Ford Mustang, and then just print up a bunch of sales contracts.
Now Ford has done what so many Mustang customers are trying to do…recapture their youth. The new Boss 302, or, technically the Boss 5-liter, makes 444-horsepower, which takes this boomer time machine to 60-miles per hour in around 4.3-seconds. In 1969, that took 6.5-seconds, which was enough to impress that hippie chick in the crochet vest and hip-huggers.
This one has a fairly standard interior with special Recaro racing seats. The 19-inch wheels wear Pirelli P-Zero’s and the grip is like Hulk Hogan in full ‘roid rage.
And the sound from the specially tuned exhaust sounds exactly like Steve McQueen chasing bad guys in San Francisco.
The base model is just over $40-large and the super-stud Laguna Seca model, about $10-grand more.
The class of ’69 will have their 43rd annual reunion next spring. My advice is, skip the party and buy a Boss 302. After all, it still looks as good as you remember.
