SMITH COUNTY — Kilgore College student Chelsea Elaine Kirkland, 19, from Tatum, was killed in a traffic accident Tuesday morning on Texas 31 in Smith County, officials said.
Kirkland was a sophomore and a twirler with the Kilgore College band who started classes at the college in the fall of 2009, college officials said.
The fatal wreck happened about 9 a.m. Tuesday on Texas 31 near the Smith County Road 25 intersection. Officials said a Cadillac was slowing down to make a U-turn when a sport utility vehicle driven by Kirkland came westbound over a hill and clipped the left rear bumper of the Cadillac.

Officials tell KETK crews on the scene, there was one person in each of the cars involved.
DPS says there was a car parked on the shoulder of Hwy. 31, when a car driving westbound swerved to miss it and rolled several times.
The driver of that car was killed.
Name of the driver has not been released at this time.
Smith County DPS officials tell KETK, at least one person has been killed in a wreck on Hwy. 31 East, between Tyler and Kilgore, near County Rd. 25.
The wreck happened around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Two vehicles were involved in the accident.
Officials are still on scene, details are limited at this time.
KETK has a crew en route and will provide more information as it becomes available.
