TYLER, TX (KETK) - — Yesterday I was speaking with a guest we often have on our East Texas live midday news.
One topic lead to the other and before you know it...our conversation came down to this one sentence.
American needs to un-learn the way we have been doing things for about 50 years.
What started things off talking about was schools loans.
Kids we both know right out of college owe 80-200 thousand dollars on school loans.
Is there no oversight?
Where is the school counselor or mom and dad watching all the add up?
Or..how did the price skyrocket this much in 20 years?
Used to when a kid went off to college they saved....or slowly worked their way through.
I'm re-reading a book right now about Lyndon Johnson...and the hardest thing he learned in college was literally where his next meal was coming from.
All of our infrastructure needs an update. But we cannot agree on how to pay for it.
Are we spending our money wisely to fix it..or just throwing money
at the problem through government stimulus which so far has a checkered past?
Used to...be you has to put a good down payment on a house...and yes..this is very hard for all of us...but government wanted everyone to feel good about themselves and made it cheap.
That set us up for one of the biggest financial meltdowns we've had in 100 years.
Used to be,,when you wanted something..you saved for it or went without it.
The old folks called this making do.
Us younger folks from the me generation call it..I'm special and I've got to have this cool thing...I'll just pay the minimum charge on my credit cards until I'm dead.
Then..catch me if you can.
Look at the mess we're in.
We've had a 50 year war on poverty...a war on this..a war on that..and all we've done is just dig a hole I hope we can get out of.
I still think we can do it.
If...we unlearn about 50 years of the way we do things.
That's my point of view what's yours?
