But the Lumberjacks (3-5, 2-2 Southland) roared back and scored the game's last 30 points.
Attaway's 9-yard pass to Cordell Roberson gave Stephen F. Austin a 23-17 lead in the third quarter.
The Lumberjacks added two more touchdowns on Will Jefferson's interception in the end zone and Fred Ford's 1-yard run.
Jeremy Barnes finished with 68 yards rushing and a TD for Stephen F. Austin and Jordan Wiggs kicked three field goals.
Stroud threw for 198 yards and Champlain Babin ran for a 5-yard score for the Cowboys (3-5, 2-3), who have lost four straight.
