TYLER — Tyler Investigators have made an arrest in connection with the shooting that occurred at Varsity Place Apartments last night around 7:22 p.m.
Brandon Raynard Willis, B/M, 05/19/1992, of Dallas was charged with Manslaughter, a 2nd degree Felony. The victim was identified as Daveon Johnson, B/M, 08/21/1993, also of Dallas.
Investigators determined that four young men from the Dallas area, including the two above are leasing an apartment at Varsity Place Apartments. Willis is a current student attending Tyler Junior College and Johnson is a former student of Tyler Junior College. Three of the roommates were home at the time of the incident. Investigators were told that Willis had pointed a 38 revolver at Johnson and was explaining how he had been shot in the past. Willis had pulled the trigger several times thinking the weapon was unloaded when it discharged striking Johnson.
Johnson was shot in the upper rights side of his back and was pronounced dead at East Texas Medical Center at 8:08 p.m. An autopsy will be performed at Southeast Forensics.

Tyler Police tell KETK an arrest has been made in connection with the shooting at the Varsity Apartment Complex at UT Tyler.

UPDATE: At 7:22pm on November 29, 2011, Tyler Police dispatch received a 911 call from this location. The caller said unknown suspect had just shot his friend. Officers immediately responded to the scene. When officers arrived, a black male victim was located inside this apartment. The victim had one gunshot wound to his upper torso.
Tyler Fire and East Texas EMS arrived on the scene and began caring for the victim. While being attended by EMS, the victim lost consciousness. EMS and Fire began life saving efforts on the victim. The victim was transported to East Texas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time after arrival.
Investigators with the Major Crimes Unit and the Crime Scene Unit arrived and will complete this investigation. Witnesses to the incident were transported to the police department where they will be interviewed.
The identity of the victim will be released when his next of kin are notified.

Tyler Police tell KETK, a man was shot to death at a Tyler Apartment complex.
It happend near UT Tyler at the Varsity Place Apartments on the 3400 block of Varsity.
Police tell KETK, the "shots fired" call came in around 7:30 Tuesday night.
When they got to the scene, they say, a 19-year-old black man was found shot.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
At this time, police tell KETK they are questioning people at the scene.
Witnesses tell us, it started with an altercation.
No one else was injured.
The name of the man killed is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident remains under investigation.
