Tim DeRuyter is trying to keep Texas A&M focused on its bowl game while the program searches for its next head coach.
The Aggies (6-6) will play Northwestern (6-6) in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston on Dec. 31.
A week ago, A&M fired Mike Sherman and put defensive coordinator DeRuyter in charge of the team for the game.
DeRuyter said Thursday he's avoided what he called the "hornet's nest" swirling around the program this week because he's been on the road recruiting.
He met with the Aggies before he left on Monday, and told them to control what they could - namely final exams and bowl preparations.
The Aggies will hold their first bowl practice on Saturday, and DeRuyter vowed that his team will be "single-minded."
