Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will take a medical leave to undergo a scheduled surgical
procedure this week.
The team said in a statement Wednesday that the 64-year-old Phillips is expected to return this season. Linebackers coach Reggie Herring will run the defense for Houston (10-3) in Sunday's game against Carolina (4-9).
Phillips was hired Jan. 5, implemented a 3-4 alignment and has guided a huge turnaround.
Houston's defense leads the league this season in total yards allowed at 275 per game after ranking 30th in
2010.
The Texans are fourth in rushing defense at 91.5 yards per game and third in pass defense at 183.5 yards per game.
Phillips is expected to speak to reporters after Wednesday's practice.
