TOPEKA, Kan. — (AP) - A couple of major east-west Interstate highways through Kansas and the Texas panhandle are open again, after being shut down by a powerful snowstorm. New Mexico has also reopened its section of Interstate 40.
A state trooper in Kansas says authorities were dealing with dozens of accidents this morning in which motorists slid off highways. He says roads were covered with ice, with snow packed on top.
Travelers are scrambling to rearrange their plans, mid trip. A motel in Hays, Kansas, booked three dozen rooms in 20 minutes last night, as drivers got off Interstate 70 earlier than planned.
One Wyoming family gave up after their SUV nearly slid into a ditch. Greg Boughton says, "It wasn't worth risking it." They decided to head east, instead of west, toward family in Oklahoma.
