nacogdoches — A Nacogdoches man is fighting for his life after stealing a car from the Sunshine Food Mart and crashing it soon after.
Authorities received a call at 10:22 PM from Sunshine Food Mart, located in the 2000 block of North Street, reporting a vehicle being stolen. According to police, a 26-year old woman had parked her vehicle in front of the store and went inside, leaving the vehicle running. While inside, she saw a man get in vehicle without permission.
The victim went outside and tried to open the door, and the suspect put the vehicle in gear and backed into her, knocking her to the ground. The suspect then sped away from the store headed north on North Street in the stolen vehicle.
A minute after the call on the robbery, a major crash was reported in the 3000 block of North Street. Officers found that the vehicle reported stolen from Sunshine Food Mart had hit an SUV driven by Jack Curran, 22 of Nacogdoches, that was driving north on North Street and another SUV, driven by Martin Cobos, 73 of Nacogdoches, that was also northbound. The stolen vehicle continued and struck a utility pole and overturned.
The driver of the vehicle that was reported stolen was identified as Chad Carney, 32 of Nacogdoches. He was taken to a local hospital and admitted with serious injuries.
Martin Cobos was taken to a hospital by private vehicle for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The victim of auto theft was taken to the hospital for treatment of what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
These cases are still under investigation and multiple charges are pending at this time.
