The City Council has decided to apply for a $500,000 grant through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs that would allow the city to restore or rebuild up to six homes for residents who meet various guidelines, City Manager Jeff Ellington said Wednesday. He does not expect the city’s cost to exceed $12,000.
The state has offered the grant in the past, but has always required a match from the entity applying for the grant, Ellington said. The city of Gilmer could not afford to participate in the past because it could not afford the match, he said. This year, however, the state removed the match, and the council decided to participate, he said.
