Longview, TX — About 70 high school students from across the country will compete in a design contest to modify a small, battery-operated 4WD amphibious vehicle capable of propelling itself over 12-foot-long course including water and land within 30 seconds. Winners will be based on total distance traveled in the shortest time.
These bright high school student will be armed with a hot glue gun, utility knife, scissors and ruler, along with Styrofoam, tongue depressors, popsicle sticks, rubber bands and a quart-sized Ziploc bag. Each vehicle must be able to float in 3 inches of water and negotiate a 15-degree ramp. No modifications will be allowed to the battery or motor of the basic vehicle.
Teams will use their creativity to modify their vehicles and will have less than an hour to design, build and test their models. Awards will be presented after 5:30 p.m.
