Komen released the following statement in regards to a new program helping young breast cancer survivors:
In 2012, it is estimated that there will be over 220,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed and there will be 63,000 cases of in situ breast cancer. All women are at risk for breast cancer, in fact the leading risk factors for breast cancer are being female and getting older. Statistics show that just five percent of all breast cancer occurs in women under the age of 40 and the most common cancer in pregnant women and postpartum women is breast cancer. While those statistics might seem small, a breast cancer diagnosis for a young woman is frightening. These young women are often still at home raising young children, raising families and trying to maintain a professional career.
Although there are numerous support groups in East Texas for breast cancer survivors, Komen Tyler has identified that there are not any specific programs offering support for “young survivors”. The area lacks a support group for pre-menopausal women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Because of this, a group of women in the Tyler area are starting a new program through the Komen Tyler Affiliate. The group is aimed at helping young women (50 and younger) get through the diagnosis of and treatment for breast cancer. The individuals in this group want to be there for women, who are of the same age, and help get them through the difficult times. Those who have been diagnosed say that having the support of someone who has walked in their footsteps is often incredibly helpful. All of the women involved in this new program have been through a diagnosis.
The group's first meeting is March 6, 2012. On that day, 10 women will meet and gather ideas to get this program up and running. The group is very excited about it and can't wait to make a positive difference in the community.
Komen Tyler is currently providing $200,000 to programs in East Texas that provide screening mammograms and diagnostic services for over 3,000 women a year and an additional $46,500 in education programs.
