TYLER — The official start of Spring is only a few days away, and you may have already noticed pollen collecting on your car and irritating your allergies.
Allergist Dr. Chris Wrenn says the "yellow stuff" is a bit early this year because the winter was very mild.
He says you can develop allergies any time in life, and they are actually more common in children, because there immune systems are new and they are exposed to it a lot more than we think.
He says it often bothers eyes more than the nose, too.
"I think people will put up with a lot of nasal symptoms before they will put up with a lot of red itchy eyes," Dr. Wrenn said.
But one person the pollen is not bothering is Edward Starks.
"Business picks up every year during this time because of the yellow pollen has fallen, and people can't stand it," Starks said, owner of Ed's Car Wash and Detail in Tyler.
Starks says sales go up about 20 to 30 percent every year around allergy season.
"It's a good thing for me every year," he said. "People have allergies and they don't want it on their car, they don't want it anywhere."
But unlike some car wash "rain checks," he says there are no refunds for pollen.
"You can come get your car washed and in about 30 minutes, it's gonna be covered again ... so just keep coming back!" he said.
Dr. Wrenn also says a lot of times, people can spend a lot of money treating the wrong thing for their allergies, so see your family doctor for advice on what to take first.
